What is Boudoir?

To me boudoir photography is all about capturing the beauty of a woman, no matter the setting, clothing, or lack thereof. It’s curves, and light, and subtleties. But that’s vague, I know, so let’s look at little closer at the genre of photography that is coming back into vogue.

The word “Boudoir” comes from the French and literally means a lady’s private bedroom, sitting room or dressing room. It derives from the French verb “bouder” meaning to pout. Using this knowledge, we can surmise that a Boudoir-type photograph is one of a more private nature. Now this doesn’t translate into anything salacious, rather it just rules out public situations.

Think of it this way – Boudoir is about those private moments a woman spends in her room. For example, the images could be of a woman lost deep in thought, getting ready to go out for the evening, or applying makeup. It’s during those fleeting moments that the facets of a woman’s personality shine through, like gems in the moonlight.

Simply put, Boudoir photography is all about capturing the inner beauty that lies within each woman.

The images produced during your session can be flirty, fun, sexy, serious, edgy, playful.

That’s the great thing about Boudoir photography– the shoot can be anything you want it to be; you can choose what side of your personality to let shine through in your images. Just as you can choose how much, or how little you would like to wear.

Typically, women choose to wear camisoles, lingerie, matching bra/ underwear sets, corsets or stockings. A crisp white bed sheet, a plush robe,  a fabulous pair of heels, a vintage nightgown…all have been worn by countless women before to create spectacular images.

Some women choose to go completely bare, relying on creative positioning and hiding the naughty bits behind the arm of a chair, the post of a canopy bed etc.

No matter the clothing or the mood of the shoot (retro, glam, artistic, sultry) the one common ideal is that the images are supposed to capture the beauty of the woman– and yes, ALL women are beautiful– and Boudoir photography strives to prove that!
